When I was a little boy… wait don’t leave!
When I was a little boy I heard a recording of Pictures at an Exhibition composed by Mr. Modest Mussorgsky (some Russian guy) and it was performed on a piano.
I was completely blown away (you knew I would say that).
Years later (1997) I heard the same piece courtesy of NPR I was driving home from a gig at a bar when I heard a concert of Pictures at an Exhibition and the announcer was talking about this great Ravel orchestration of that piece.
Again I was blown away… I couldn’t believe Ravel had orchestrated the piece (he must have liked it a lot).
I always say thank you Mr. Mussorgsky for giving me an idea of how I should aspire to sound and thank you Mr. Ravel for giving me an idea of how I should orchestrate.
Here’s the piece from all the work that I find really epic and futuristic (for the time it was composed):
Enjoy
